I love B&W photography and enjoy shooting film along with digital. Film was my first love in photography. This medium has the power to transform a portrait into an expressive and timeless work of art. Nothing compares to the effect of film grain on a B&W photograph; it captures a richness and subtlety of shading that cannot be achieved digitally.
I'm not knocking digital ... I shoot a lot of digital, but I love film and love having the opportunity to shoot film during a portrait session or at an event that lends itself to B&W film.
For those photographers to just happen to be reading my blog and want to know about my film cameras, I use a Mamiya 645, a Rolleiflex, and a Nikon F 100. I just bought a vintage 4x5 camera I can't wait to give a try! |

A few years ago I was at Revolution Mill in Greensboro photographing a wedding. A young lady was playing the harp so beautifully I had to stop and listen. We spoke briefly and exchanged business cards. Last week I received a call, she had just given birth to a beautiful little boy and wanted me to photograph him. Grantham was relaxed and calm, a perfect little angel. I thought ... how nice it would be to have a mom that could send you off to sleep each night with the soothing sound of a harp. |

O ne of the best things about living in a small town your entire life is that you get to know and make friends with lots of people. You make connections and establish relationships with people and they become dear to you. I've known Monica for a long time, she's a beautiful young lady that loves kids. I photographed her senior pics a few years ago and now she's a wonderful wife to Adam and a super mom to Cal.
Of all the things I just mentioned, there's one other thing that's even more special ... Monica's granddad and my my dad were very close friends. They carpooled to work together for many years. I would have loved to of heard some of their conversations as they traveled to and fro. I lost my dad about nine years ago and it still hurts to know he's gone, but every time I see Mr. Mills somehow I see a little bit of dad in him and it always brightens my day. Mr. Mills is having some surgery soon... keep him and his family in your prayers. Do you see how good it is, living in a little town. |

H ave you heard the quote " Love is spelled T-I-M-E?" With all my heart I believe it's true.... especially when our children are involved. Little ones need to know that they are special and worthy of the best we have to offer. Not necessarily a vacation or spending lots of money but doing simple things like a walk in the woods or reading a book or just sitting on the floor playing with blocks. I know that Sam gets the proper attention, it shows in the smile on his face!
I Took His Hand and Followed
My dishes went unwashed today,
I didn't make the bed,
I took his hand and followed
Where his eager footsteps led.
Oh yes, we went adventuring,
My little son and I,
Exploring all the great outdoors
Beneath the summer sky.
We waded in a crystal stream,
We wandered through a wood;
My kitchen wasn't swept today
But life was gay and good.
We found a cool, sun-dappled glade
And now my small son knows
How Mother Bunny hides her nest,
Where jack-in-the-pulpit grows.
We watched a robin feed her young,
We climbed a sunlit hill,
Saw cloud-sheep scamper through the sky,
We plucked a daffodil.
That my house was neglected,
That I didn't brush the stairs,
In twenty years, no one on earth
Will know, or even care.
But that I've helped my little boy
To noble manhood grow,
In twenty years, the whole wide world
May look and see and know. |

W hen the kids were young I sang to them often. Even to this day they still remember the words to most of those little tunes. One of our favorites went like this.... "I am a promise, I am a possibility. I am a promise with a capitol "P". I am a great big bundle of potentiality." Every time I photograph a little child like Luke, the words to that song resound through my heart and I wonder... what possibilities does the world hold for this little one! |
